Sunday Listening: CARHARTT WIP Radio Rewind presents Detroit’s ANDRÉS
Launched in 2008, Carhartt WIP Radio is a monthly broadcast dedicated to the work of one artist or record label. In the past weeks of halted travel and self-isolation, Carhartt WIP Radio Rewind has plunged into its own archive to bring us – and its global roster of featured guests – select gems from the brand’s 150-plus past shows.
The series kicked off with the in-depth look at the catalogue of the famed Berlin based house label Innervisions, hosted by the label’s co-founder Âme in 2014. Curated by Canadian DJ and producer Deadbeat, the second installment of the archival reboot celebrated the back catalogue of the legendary label Trojan Records, which brought reggae to the top of the UK charts, and introduced The Upsetters, Desmond Dekker, and Jimmy Cliff to a global audience starting in the late 1960s. Following Thursday’s tribute to DFA records compiled by Suzi Horn, today’s flashback features Detroit DJ, percussionist, and producer Andrés, best known for his work with Slum Village and J Dilla. This show’s initial release back in 2016 accompanied a small Carhartt capsule collection, created in collaboration with Andrés’ fellow Detroit native Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodymann. Fittingly, the mix maps out the catalogues of Moodymann’s labels – KDJ and Mahogani Music – spotlighting classics like “I Got Werk” and “Shades Of Jae” alongside Andrés’ productions “Love Hurts” and “Salvador de Bahia.”
