The first emoticon was sent on September 19, 1982, at Carnegie Mellon University. Scott E. Fahlman, part of the Computer Science Department, messaged the rest of the faculty: "I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-). Actually, it is probably more economical to mark things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use :-(.” Our homage to popular culture’s most versatile and persistent glyph incorporates a rave-ready neon yellow smiley into the 032c logo. The result is a black-light sensitive character sequence for joke markers – or NOT joke markers, if you’re upside down (or tripping hard enough to think you are).
The 032c “Smiley” Pin can be added to any outfit to keep your allegiance to the night - and to humor - alive no matter where you are.
