Saturday Film Premiere: RALF SCHERMBERG's Yesterway
Following the completion of his recent Indarella, shot between 2014 and 2019, Ralf Schmerberg presents YESTERWAY: the 98-minute result of a deep dive into the filmmaker, commercial director, and photographer’s last decade of work. Produced – and inspired by – the COVID-19 lockdown, Yesterway chronicles a recently “vanished” past using compiled footage shot during Schmerberg’s travels (to every continent) and an atmospheric score conceived by music director Tobias Feltes. “When I look at my archive of footage, you find people from all locked down countries living their lives joyfully,” says Schmerberg. “There are parties, there is the Oktoberfest, there’s people working in China, celebrating in America, eating pasta in Italy – everything that’s not possible at the moment is in there to see.” The filmmaker has noted a shift in our collective impression of the passage of time. “When you look at the material, it feels like a long time ago: Yesterway [is] the way we lived Yesterday.”
