Infinite Pokerface: Shades by Carrera and JARED LETO

The story goes that the Roman emperor Nero observed the gladiators fight to their death from behind the safety of his smaragdus-lensed specs. The concaved emerald-like gemstone was apparently an excellent remedy for his majesty’s nearsightedness, in addition to blocking off the sun’s glare. Meanwhile, in the Eastern hemisphere, an early inception of sunglasses materialized in a more somber manner. Donning onyx-colored optics – made of smoky quartz – was part of the regalia of ancient Chinese court judges, who preferred to keep their eyes from betraying any emotions.

This ancient tradition of eyewear has carried on into the modern day via Hollywood, a location chosen to be the center of America’s film industry by virtue of its ample and scorching brightness. Sunglasses are the signature garb for actors, an off-duty reprieve donned by those who make a living from channeling emotion through their faces. This cold-blooded allure is central to Carrera’s collaboration with musician and actor Jared Leto, the “Inspired by Jared Leto Collection.” Its thick acetate frames are supported by a thin metal top bar, adding an extra layer of invincibility to its already-immortal 1960s silhouette. This is everyone’s pokerface.
