FRANCESCO VEZZOLI Uses Grindr as a Sociological Tool to Understand Bodies
Italian artist FRANCESCO VEZZOLI spoke with Kevin McGarry about the geosocial networking app for gay, bisexual, and bicurious men:
“Self-portraiture was certainly a fil rouge in Warhol’s work and mine too, although I am more interested in the way it was conceived of and perceived in past centuries as a private pleasure rather than a ticket to the world of public pleasures and voyeurism. Grindr is the most evident playground for these kind of games.
“The thing with Grindr is that in a more metropolitan environment, you have all these perfect bodies and perfect hairdos, and the more you move into the province, the more you realize that the bodies and fashions are different.
“I think what is interesting with Grindr is if you travel and you keep it on all the time, you just see it’s a kind of anthropological evolution and revolution somehow—you see faces and bodies changing.”
