"They're selling things that money can't buy, things that many people already have—dishonesty, hatred, American tragedy.” — Cali Thornhill DeWitt (032c, Issue 27)

For his exhibition at the 032c Workshop, the Los Angeles-based artist bought a hand-made memorial sweatshirt for the German-French jet set icon Romy Schneider as a gift for 032c editor-in-chief Joerg Koch. We then created an exact replica of the sweatshirt, even leaving a German spelling mistake from the original.

Affixed with solemn gothic lettering, DeWitt's sweatshirts borrow from the swap-meet designs made by Los Angeles gangs in the 1980s and 90s. With other pieces dedicated to dead cultural icons ranging from Massimo Vignelli to Biggie Smalls, the sweatshirts place a dark veil over the glossy surfaces of fame.
