VALENTINO’s Paris Flagship Is Now Open and It Ignores Our Anxiety About Taste

18 Valentino

Valentino Uomo has opened its flagship store in Paris. Designed by British architect David Chipperfield in collaboration with the brand’s creative directors, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the 400-square-meter, two-story menswear boutique is made with palladiana marble and terrazzo stone, both traditional Italian materials with composite appearances as immersive as Valentino’s new trademark camouflage. The appeal of fortified yet fractured surfaces is one similar to facing a body of water that you can walk upon. And when simple architecture achieves this magic it becomes timeless and outside of history. It’s clear that Chipperfield, a master of meticulously crafted minimalism, and Valentino are moving away from the visual panic of today’s retail design, going back towards an architectural design uncontaminated by our anxiety about taste.
