032c’s Ten Must-See Exhibitions of Berlin Art Week 2014

With the start of the art fair (that pretends not to be an art fair) abc and dozens of gallery and institutional openings around the city, BERLIN ART WEEK begins today. In the name of user-friendliness, 032c has assembled a list of our favorite exhibitions of Berlin Art Week:

Ryan Trecartin – SITE VISIT

RYAN TRECARTIN’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany features a new multi-channel film and an expansive site-specific installation designed in collaboration with Lizzie Fitch, Trecartin’s longtime creative partner. Trecartin’s densely layered narratives are propelled by a cast of complexly drawn yet stylized characters, who are at once familiar and foreign. Trecartin’s movies refer to the aesthetics and social codes prevalent in various realms of pop culture—extending the frenetic pace and ever-evolving identities of protagonists from reality TV, gaming, and internet media. Shot almost entirely in an abandoned Masonic temple in Los Angeles, and featuring 3D animations by Rhett LaRue, SITE VISIT is Trecartin’s spin on a Jurassic Park-esque adventure narrative.

Pasolini Roma

Pasolini Roma takes a look at the Italian writer and filmmaker PIER PAOLO PASOLINI (1922-1975) in the context of his relationship with Rome. It conjures visions of poetry, politics, and a zest for big-city living, sex, friendship and cinema. Pier Paolo Pasolini was one of the most outstanding and ambivalent personalities on the European intellectual scene of the post-war period. As a writer, and as a director of controversial films, he sought to explore timeless themes: the fate of man, rural life, religion, sexuality, and death. In doing so, he always avoided commonly accepted standards and created images of extraordinary clarity and starkness, thus becoming the most provocative figure in Italian society.

Ilja Karilampi – new RELEASES

Fresh off his solo exhibition at Suzanne Geiss Company in New York City (of which 032c received a VIP tour), ILJA KARILAMPI returns to Berlin to present new RELEASES at Sandy Brown. Bathed in blue UV light, the exhibition continues Karilampi’s exploration of after-hours textures with neon motifs on aluminum panels.

Sed Tantum Dic Verbo (Just Say The Word)

Featuring artists such as JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT, DAN COLEN, JACK PIERSON, RICHARD PRINCE, and DASH SNOW, Sed Tantum Dic Verbo (Just Say The Word) examines the use of words in art. It brings together artists from the 1960s to the present day who have all had a strong relationship with the show’s curator, the American writer and editor GLENN O’BRIEN.

German-born painter, and alumnus of the 032c vitrine, THOMAS SCHEIBITZ presents Radiopictures at Sprüth Magers. The exhibition features a selection of Scheibitz’s recent large-scale paintings.

Thomas Demand – Dailies 2008-2014

Since 2008, THOMAS DEMAND has been making the Dailies, a series of photographs developed from pictures he has taken on his camera phone. Best known for large-scale photographs of life-sized models built by the artist, which might portray an interior space linked to the news or recent history, Dailies sees Demand turning his attention to the overlooked details of everyday life.

Helen Marten – Orchids, or a hemispherical bottom

Johann König presents HELEN MARTEN’s room-sized installation Orchids, or a hemispherical bottom for the first time in Germany after it had been created for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. It centers on an animated video in which Marten sets forth a sanitized and alluring world of free-floating and fragmentary objects. Excised from normal context and imbued with an impossible cosmetic sheen, these crystalline forms are conjured in colors that range from the surreally heightened to the deliberately banal.

MIKE BOUCHET’s large-scale paintings demonstrate how our cultural climate is ruled by the bewitching mixed signal known as the ‘double bind.’ The source material, with its heavy psychological baggage, is transformed through painting back into a new image, keeping psychological weight, but with its original agenda obscured.

This exhibition at Haus am Waldsee will features works from the past 10 years, which have rarely—and in some cases never—been shown before. Among them is a constellation with an electric drill from 2013, in which drill-heads in the form of miniaturized popular sculptures like the Statue of Liberty are being driven through the wall from one exhibition room to the next.

For this exhibition, forty glazed ceramic vases were specially produced at Bottega Gatti in Faenza—a historical majolica atelier founded in 1928—and scattered throughout the exhibition space. Over a series of visits to the Italian atelier, a dialogue between the artist and the artisan emerged and materialized in four designs differing in shape, color, and the juxtaposition of matte and high-gloss. The resulting works are hybrids that blur the boarder between fine and applied art.
