RICCARDO TISCI, the Joyrider of S/S 2014

HD Visu RELEASERiccardo Tisci has paired Erykah Badu and Maria Borges in the new campaign for GIVENCHY’s S/S 2014 collection, which the designer considers a “car crash” of two cultures—refined Japanese elegance and natural African draping. Badu’s shoulderless outer garment is printed with an illegible pattern that is as seductive as it is unrecognizable, an international mutant mash-up of the Disney pop icons Tisci celebrated last season. While Borges wears a bright Madame Grès-like dress, harnessed around the neck, next to a beat-up Mercedes-Benz, evoking the five-car pile up at the center of Tisci’s S/S show this September in Paris. It is an uncanny win against the vertigo induced when things most familiar to us—distinctive cultures, everyday machines—become indistinguishable or damaged. The result perhaps summons an era of, to borrow from J.G. Ballard’s 1973 novel Crash, “a new sexuality, born from a perverse technology.”
